Balabolka can use the Microsoft Speech API 4.x/5.x voices and the Microsoft Speech Platform text-to-speech engines.
The application itself does not contain any voices. The developer of Balabolka is not connected with any of the speech engine manufacturers.
SAPI 4
To use SAPI 4 voices, download and install the redistributable Microsoft Speech API file (spchapi.exe, 827 kB).
Free voices from the Lernout & Hauspie company:
- L&H TTS Engine, version 6 (25 MB)
Single installer for voice packs in different languages: American English, Brazilian Portuguese, British English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Mexican Spanish, Russian, Spanish. You can select the languages you need during the installation process.
- L&H TTS3000 (25 MB)
Archive with separate installers for different languages: British English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish. These installers do not work in Windows 11 (after installation, voice names are absent from the list).

Installer for American English (10 voices).

In Windows 11 the Microsoft Edge browser contains new voices. NaturalVoiceSAPIAdapter utility allows to add new speech engines to the SAPI 5 voice list. More information can be found here. Since Balabolka is a 32-bit application, you should install the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the utility (see "Installation Status" in the utility's window). You can download the latest release of the utility.
The NaturalVoiceSAPIAdapter utility will add voices that require Internet access to work: this is identified by the presence of the word "Online" in the voice name (for example, "Microsoft Yunxi Online"). There are also versions of some of these voices that can be installed directly on your computer: these voices will work without network access ("Microsoft Xiaoxiao Native", "Microsoft Yunxi Native").

Microsoft Azure includes several multilingual voices (that is, voices that support multiple languages at once). For example, these include the "en-US-JennyMultilingualNeural", "en-US-RyanMultilingualNeural", and "zh-CN-XiaochenMultilingualNeural" voices. However, the voices in the packages listed above support only one language each. This means that the "Jenny" voice for Australian English, the "Jenny" voice for British English, "Jenny" for German, "Jenny" for Dutch, and so on are available for download. It was decided to rename each "Jenny", "Ryan", or "Xiaochen" for each language: this is how the "Poppy", "Jemma", "Jutta", "Janneke", "Andrian", and other voices appeared. This will prevent name conflicts in the list of available voices if several languages are installed at the same time.
It is necessary to install NaturalVoiceSAPIAdapter to use Microsoft Online and Microsoft Native voices. Download and unzip the archive into a folder (this folder cannot be deleted while the voices are in use). Run Installer.exe, activate the check box "Enable Microsoft Edge online voices", click the buttons "Install 32-bit" and "Install 64-bit".
